Does health insurance cover OPD and dental?

Updated August 2026 · Reviewed quarterly against insurer policy wordings · We don't sell insurance

Standard health insurance in India covers hospitalization, not everyday care. OPD — doctor visits, tests, medicines — is excluded by default, and so is almost all routine dental. OPD riders exist, but they cost ₹578–₹5,109 a year for benefits capped at ₹4,000–₹25,000, with waiting periods and reimbursement paperwork.

What OPD riders actually pay

Every plan below is a real policy sold today. Rider premiums quoted for a 25-year-old in Delhi at ₹15 lakh sum insured, June 2026. Your quote will differ — always re-quote for your own profile.

Plan + OPD riderRider cost/yrWhat you getThe catch
HDFC ERGO Optima Secure+Optima Wellbeing add-on₹949Unlimited GP consultations, 50% off diagnostics, 20% off pharmacyIn-person consults are general physicians only, in six metros only, cashless network only. 30-day initial wait.
Care SupremeCare OPD add-on₹5784 GP + 4 specialist consultations a year₹4,000 annual ceiling and ₹500 per consultation — below most specialist fees. Reimbursement only.
Niva Bupa ReAssure 2.0Acute Care add-on₹5,109Unlimited tele-consultations incl. specialists, pharmacy and diagnosticsTele-consultations only — no in-person cover at all. Pharmacy and diagnostics capped at ₹5,000–₹20,000 per member.
SBI Super Health PlatinumBuilt-in₹10,000 per person of OPD including dental and visionOnly unlocks at a ₹50 lakh minimum sum insured — the premium tier does the gatekeeping.
Star Health Super StarBuilt-in + diagnostics ridern/aUnlimited tele-consultations via Star's app; dental clean and X-ray from year twoNo in-person GP cover. The dental benefit is one member, once a year, starting year two.

The rider math: Across the five plans above, ₹578–₹5,109 a year buys an annual benefit cap of ₹4,000–₹25,000 — and those are at the affordable end. Typical OPD riders in the wider market run ₹3,000–₹8,000 a year for caps of ₹5,000–₹25,000. Either way, best case you recover two to three times what the rider cost, and only if you exhaust the cap, keep every receipt, and file for reimbursement.

Does health insurance cover dental?

Base health policies cover dental only when hospitalization is medically necessary — accident trauma, oral cancer, jaw surgery. The dentist's chair is excluded by default across the market, and the two most expensive things a dentist will ever quote you — implants and braces — are excluded essentially everywhere as cosmetic.

A handful of plans do cover routine dental through OPD benefits — capped, and gated by waiting periods:

PlanDental benefitLimit
TATA AIG Medicare PremierRoot canals, extractions, fillings₹10,000–₹25,000, waiting period applies
Bajaj Healthcare SupremeDental consultations and procedures incl. RCTUp to ₹25,000
Aditya Birla Activ Health Platinum EnhancedOral evaluation, cleaning, X-ray₹15 lakh+ sum insured only
Care PlusDental within OPD limit₹1,500–₹2,500 a year

CarePass is a discount membership, not insurance. It lowers your bills; it does not pay them. Keep your health policy for hospitalization — nothing replaces that.

Questions people actually ask

What is OPD in health insurance?
OPD (out-patient department) means care without hospital admission — consultations, diagnostic tests, pharmacy. Standard Indian health policies exclude it; riders add limited cover back, typically capped between ₹4,000 and ₹25,000 a year.
Is a root canal covered by health insurance?
Only under specific dental OPD riders such as TATA AIG Medicare Premier or Bajaj Healthcare Supreme, capped at ₹10,000–₹25,000 with waiting periods. Base policies exclude routine dental work including root canals.
Are dental implants covered by insurance in India?
No. Implants are classed as cosmetic in every policy we reviewed and are excluded, unless required as reconstruction after an accident. Implants are typically the largest out-of-pocket dental cost.
Is an OPD rider worth it?
If you reliably spend more than the rider's cap every year and don't mind reimbursement paperwork, possibly. For most people the caps are low (₹4,000–₹25,000), the per-visit limits are lower, and the friction is high.
Does CarePass replace health insurance?
No. Keep your hospitalization policy — nothing replaces it. CarePass is a discount membership for the everyday care layer that insurance was never designed to pay for: consultations, diagnostics, pharmacy and dental at member rates.
